About the project

Canon and concert life: Formation Processes within the Musical Life of Stockholm 1848-1914

This website is a result of the research project “Canon and Concert Life: Formation Processes in Stockholm’s Music Scene 1848-1914”. Led by Dr. Anne Reese Willén and funded by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and Uppsala University, our project investigates the evolution of concert life and repertoire in Stockholm during the period 1848-1914.

Our goal is to provide deeper insights into how concert culture and musical repertoire developed during this time. We explore how contemporary debates, ideologies, institutions, and individuals influenced this process.

Musical Canon

Central to the project is the idea that conceptions of canon played a central role in shaping concert culture, with multiple canon formations coexisting and evolving over time. Through our study, we aim to challenge traditional notions of canon formation and explore the dynamic relationship between center and periphery in European musical life.

Concert life

Our research draws on diverse sources including concert programs, advertising, posters, reviews, and archival material. This data is meticulously curated in a database, allowing for both descriptive statistics and qualitative analyses.

Welcome to explore Stockholm’s 19th century concert scene, and its influence on the broader music culture. Explore our database, access research findings, and stay updated with the latest discoveries.
